History of Colan Barton

Definition of "Barton":  - the demesne lands of a manor, also; the manor itself or 'best of the land'

From 'The History of Cornwall' Hitchens & Drew 1824:  "the barton of Colan originally belonged to a family of that name, early as the days of EdwardIII.    By this family it was owned until approximately 1500 when for want of male issue it was carried by two daughters into the families of Blewett of Devon and Trefusis between whom the property was divided.   The Blewetts on the acquirement of this property, took up abode on this barton and from these all the Blewetts of Cornwall have descended.   To perpetuate the name of Colan several children of the Blewett family were thus baptized as Colan.   Major Colan Blewett is said to have distinguished himself as an active officer in the service of Charles I.   The part of this estate which belonged to the Blewetts, was purchased some time in the 17th Century by the Hoblyns of Nanswhydden"

We're adding some more recent history soon!!

Colan Barton is part of a tiny hamlet that contains the ancient Colan Church. Built in the 13th Century it looks particularly gorgeous in the snow-kissed picture to the left and you can find out more about the history and parish by visiting www.colan-church.org

The Renovation Process

Since 1992

By the early 1990's Colan Barton had been abandoned and was in a pretty sorry state of disrepair. We fell in love with the location and decided to undertake a daunting renovation process.   Since 1992 it's been an ongoing and tiring process but eventually we've created a collection of properties, gardens and landscapes that we hope you'll agree are a fitting compliment to the history and location.   Like the Forth Bridge it's a never ending challenge - Justin has been working all winter (2009/2010) to upgrade and improve - but we have an affection for the place that we hope guests appreciate and enjoy.

Visiting and Enjoying

The Present

The natural beauty, local history and care with which we've renovated these properties provides guests with a unique cornish holiday experience.   It's difficult to describe the joy of waking up into a Colan morning and we're always told off by guests for not providing more information on the website.  (Our next step is to include an improved gallery + you tube intro)  The sounds, smells and utter tranquility provide a fabulous escape from busy lives and having arrived our guests soon collapse into heaps of recuperative peace.   We've furnished the property in keeping with the aesthetic and tradition and to allow guests seeking peace and quiet an environment where you get a real sense of getting away from it all.

"you have a fantastic property and we loved staying here.   the peace and tranquility each morning gave us all an opportunity to switch off and de-stress.  it will be very tough returning to the real world."
